Free Domain Names with DOT.TK

I ran across an article on CNN.com’s Tech Section. It’s about a tiny island that was given its own top level domain and the people who organized it are giving out the domain names for free. I can see a couple of great uses for this.

1. To use as a temporary website. Say you only need to use the domain for a week or so. This saves you a few dollars. I can see this being nice for say a upcoming festival or a wedding website. There are so many sites out there that give you a free sub-domain and this simplifies the name.

Example: markandmindy.theknot.com TO markandmindy.tk

That looks a lot nicer on an “save the date” or an invitation, fits better too when space is a premium.

That leads me to my second point.

2. Use to shorten URLs. The banner below allows you to download the browser tool that will create a .tk domain for the current page. Take a Google Maps URL and give it a domain redirect or if there is a long complex URL use a .tk domain instead of a URL shorten-er. It will look cleaner on a tweet or Facebook post.

Here is the link to the site and below is a download for the Browser tool.
